Hospitalist Fellowship Program

UCI’s OB Hospitalist Fellowship was one of the first two programs offered in the country. UCI’s Faculty authored the first textbook in this field.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for the OB/GYN Hospitalist Fellowship Program. The OB/GYN Hospitalist Fellowship Program is the first in the country to offer an interdepartmental hospital-based curriculum. This program is a two-year fellowship designed to provide high quality, advanced education in hospital-based obstetrics and gynecology focused on maximizing patient safety. It provides a strong blend of clinical, surgical and healthcare systems training in both academic and community-based hospital settings. Upon completion, fellows will graduate with a Masters in Applied Science in Patient Safety and Quality.  This fellowship is designed for physicians specifically interested in gaining skills to become leaders in hospital medicine.

Requirements: Candidate must have completed an accredited four-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. A graduate of a foreign medical school must have a standard ECFMG certificate and completed postgraduate training in the United States. Fellows will be required to have a California license, in addition to being ABOG Board Eligible or Board Certified.

Responsibilities will include providing patient care, teaching clinical programs, performing University and public service, and demonstrating professional competency and activity. Fellows will rotate through a high-risk Labor & Delivery unit as well as consulting in Emergency Room and other units at the University Hospital, in addition to having significant exposure to a community-based private practice population. Fellows will complete coursework for a Masters program, which is offered online.

Learning Objectives

  • Become clinically proficient, as documented by milestones and checklists
  • Develop and implement protocols, tools and/or clinical pathways that result in enhancement of patient safety and quality care in the hospital
  • Master the dynamics of working within the academic and community healthcare systems as physician extenders
  • Supervise and teach residents and medical students in the hospital setting at UC Irvine
  • Collaborate with and assist private community physicians at St. Joseph Hospital
  • Develop expertise in drills and simulation (in-situ and lab training)
  • Attend quality and safety committee meetings at UC Irvine and St. Joseph Hospital
  • Assume leadership roles in hospital-based initiatives
  • Complete a formal research project in area of interest with research defense and research presentation
  • Complete Masters in Applied Science in Patient Safety and Quality

Clinical Experience

  • Maternal-fetal medicine ultrasound clinic, two days per month
  • Obstetric anesthesia, one to two days per month
  • Hospitalists shifts
  • Gynecology Service and Surgeries     
  • Surgical intensive care unit
  • Elective
  • Administrative days
  • Simulation lab, grand rounds, resident statistics, didactics

2025-2026 Academic Year Timeline

  • Applications will be accepted starting July 1, 2024.
  • We will continue to accept applications until September 30, 2024.
  • Virtual Interviews will be held on Friday, October 4, 2024.
  • Fellowship commencement is August 1, 2025.
