A Welcome Message from the Chair,
Robert E. Bristow, MD, MBA

Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, Irvine. As the only academic medical center serving the demographically diverse and culturally rich population of Orange County, we are dedicated to the tripartite mission of UC Irvine Health – Discover, Teach, Heal. As Champions for Women’s Health, our calling is to deliver clinically excellent, patient-centered, holistic, and accessible obstetrical and gynecological care to the women of our community, advance the science of women’s health in a meaningful and applicable fashion, and train the future leaders in women’s health care.

Our Department has a proud tradition of clinical excellence and is comprised of nationally and internationally recognized leaders in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Urogynecology, Family Planning, and General Obstetrics and Gynecology. Our Department is also one of the first in the nation to house a dedicated Division of Obstetric-Gynecologic Hospitalists. Although primarily based at the 400-bed, tertiary referral UC Irvine Douglas Hospital in Orange, our faculty and staff service a number of clinical practice locations throughout Orange County including Long Beach, Newport Beach, Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, Anaheim, and Laguna Hills. Our faculty and staff provide the full range of services including well-woman care, family planning, routine and high-risk pregnancy management, laparoscopic and robotic surgery, pelvic floor medicine, and complex treatment of gynecologic cancer.

Our clinician-scientists and investigators are widely recognized for their cutting edge, innovative research in basic and translational science, clinical trials, drug and device development, health services research, public health, health policy, international medicine, and social justice for women. Research generated from our Department has helped build the foundation for the contemporary practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology and continues to advance the field of knowledge. Visiting scholars come to UC Irvine from around the world to study with our team of researchers.

We take great pride in our comprehensive medical education program and are intensely committed to training the next generation of leaders in women’s health. Our medical student clerkships are consistently ranked at the top of the School of Medicine rotations, and our residency program and fellowships are among the most highly regarded and sought after training opportunities in the country.

Thank you for your interest in our Department. We hope that you find our website informative and welcome you to contact us with any questions or comments.
